Okay so the Twitter guys have announced that they are moving away from Joyent. Does this mean that we will be seeing more of the shared servers on FreeBSD migrate over to the servers which were running Twitter?
Is this part of the growing plan for web 2 apps. Host with Joyent until you're big enought to go it on your own and invest in your own BigIP's etc?

Really.
I have a mixed feelings. Dizzy!

I don't think it had anything to do with not being happy with Joyent.
Kristie tweeted yesterday (and I can't link to the status update now because Twitter is currently migrating and down) that their decision to move was probably financially-based.
Something along the lines of that they were just getting so big that it made financial sense to get their own servers or go elsewhere (I don't really know which of those things they are doing -- building their own infrastructure or moving to RackSpace or somewhere else)..

I'll be interested to hear where they are moving. At some point it does make sense to do your data center in house, though; looks like they've reached that point.
Financially based, huh? How are they making money, again?
Offline
monpage has them tracked.

IIRC they are still evaluating how to best do that. This is old but here is a video of an interview with Biz Stone
He goes over what he thinks makes Twitter unique and also talks about how they are still in the process of evaluation when it comes to revenue generation.
I do respect that they want to do make money in a tasteful and non-intrusive way - IOW in a way that doesn't affect the end-user's 'experience' too greatly.

Talking about http://twitter.com/kristiewells/statuses/501242852:
@gtcaz: They are moving. We call it 'graduation time', the point where some feel it financially makes sense to DIY.

Someone send GS an invite to our little forums. Quick!

So why, if Twitter is apparently rolling its own data centre, does twitter.com resolve to Verio?
I spent some time yesterday pushing back at people, including Duncan Riley of Techcrunch, who were reflexively saying that Twitter left due to unhappiness with Joyent and that Twitter would be much more stable now. I love how people make snap judgements without any inside knowledge to guide them. But it would have been nice to have some word from either party.
Me, I posit that either:
1. Joyent asked Twitter to leave, because the instability was making Joyent look bad
OR
2. Twitter is changing its infrastructure as part of being acquired by Google or MSFT

I wondered this as well. The "love note" to Joyent in Twitter's blog in the midst of such downtime might have been the trigger.

First - a big thank you to our clan for rallying around Joyent during this transition. I truly appreciate it and <3 you all for being so supportive. I did not realize how big of a non-news news story it was going to become. Shocking really. having you guys in our corner was just lovely.
I know you guys want to know what happened, and without a formal statement, assumptions will run wild - but you have to understand we cannot lift the skirts of our clients and tell the tales. I cannot even unbutton the blouse a little bit. All we can say is this has been in the works for a while, was no surprise to either party and both companies are just fine and dandy and looking forward to continued growth in our respective industries. No spin. No B.S. Just the plain and simple unsexy truth.

GS is our good friend Mr. Storey. He's been following the Twitter/Joyent thing (kinda) and posting in LongBoard. Seems he didn't realize it's been openly talked about since December.

Worst news of this whole kerfuffle.
Oh, this one is going to live forever.

This doesn't unbutton the blouse, but sometimes when Twitter bends over, you can catch a glimpse: Scaling Twitter: stats, architecture, lessons learned

My guess would be it is not architecture or infrastructure, but people related. At some point hiring your own sys admins who have direct access to the hardware becomes cheaper than $199 per incident.

You've unfortunately just been the target of a lot of bad ju-ju. The announcement of Twitter graduating from Joyent right after the Twitter <3 Joyent posts sent a mixed signal. The air was already reverberating with the Bingo/SS outage; just no way to win. Sigh.

And now the post of why they are using NTT (aka Verio) on their blog: http://blog.twitter.com/2008/02/twitter … prise.html
twitterblog wrote:
We have a stated goal to make Twitter a reliable global communication utility. While we continue to grow around the world, reliability is our most important measurement of success. In order to become a utility that people will use every day for more reasons than we could ever imagine, we need to earn trust.
We're proud to announce our strategic alliance with a company known for reliability. A subdivision of the historic Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, NTT America is part of an organization capable of restoring power to an entire nation in the wake of devastating natural disasters.
This history of reliability and global perspective attracted Twitter to NTT America Enterprise Hosting Services. As Twitter grows and more people around the world depend on our infrastructure, we feel an increased responsibility to make the right decisions for the people who have helped make us a success as well as those who have yet to discover our service.
Thanks for you patience and kind words while we move toward our goals. We're very excited about this alliance and will keep you posted as we move forward with this relationship and all the projects we plan to tackle together.
Not sure how to read the above blog post.
I prefer sticking to my I <3 Joyent. What is interesting was that Joyent -> Verio -> Joyent -> Verio -> Joyent -> Verio from the IP changes during the past two months.
