We're looking for some web design talent to join/contribute to LightPress. Neither Ludo nor myself (well, ok - mostly myself) are especially talented at design and we'd like to expand the number of out-of-the-box templates that are available. The project is also in desperate need of a logo.
If you're interested, please reply here or send an e-mail to devteam-at-lightpress-dot-org.

We have just published on our Wiki the first draft of a Howto that explains how to create LightPress Themes.

I'd quite like to get involved. I know Ludo has already expressed interest in me (Nice to be headhunted :p)
I'm not too confident with the theming system in general though, and I doubt I have the patience to theme EVERYTHINg. At the moment, my "theme" consists of a modified index.xml, header.xml, and sidebar.xml and my own css. Other than the plugins I use, everything else is untouched. And that's quite a lot of stuff untouched.
So my patience and confidence with the theming system might be a problem. However, once I finish some projects I'm working on - and I should probably finish my own website, at some point! - I'm going to look into it and see if I can come up with something.
I really love Lightpress and would love to be involved in some way.
(I'm recommending Lightpress for just about every webdsign I make/advise on that needs a CMS, at the moment :p)

Well, thanks! :)
A simple, yet elegant theme is far better than something really off the wall. And all of those plugin templates are fairly similar, so it's just a matter of consistent styling -- the hardest part are the three files you've already done plus post.xml.

You sound like me after I've had a few...

I havn't had any time to actually write any markup yet, or do anything more adventurous, but I made this quick mock-up earlier. Thoughts? Changes? Good points? Bad points?
I'll try something a litle more adventurous and more original later, been a tad busy today. :)

It looks nice. I would do the sidebar headers differently (smaller, and with a different font than the post titles), but it might be just a personal preference.
We actually have a logo, courtesy of Aaron Schaefer, so if you manage to integrate it in the header (or sidebar), it would be really nice. We also have svg versions, so we can output it at different sizes.

I like it too, although I'm not keen on red in general.

Oh, and one thing I like a lot is a navigation bar below the header. Sites using it that come to mind:
Stringspace (ofc)
Binary Bonsai (headerless at the moment)
Kevin Wen's Web

Well, if you sort me out with one that would fit in the header - not sure of the exact dimensions right now, to be perfectly honest, though, I'll have a look in a bit.
The horizontal navigation is something I like too, so I'll get that in. And the red is by no means a definite decision; I just used the elastic_minimal colours because my eye for colour is pretty poor at the best of times, and I didn't really have very long to work on it. I'll probably have a better example, with some actual markup and css, by the end of the night.
I was thinking it might be good to port some of the more popular Wordpress themes to Lightpress, too? I'm sure there are more than a few WP users who have held off switching to LP because they can;t use their favourite themes.

Looking forward to it! :)
I think you're right about porting some WordPress themes. Originally I held out for some original themes of our own but some ports might be helpful. Can you suggest any besides Kubrick? Offhand, I'm thinking Blix, Connections and maybe Pool...
Offline
I don't know about a lot of them, Connections was the only one I ever used, briefly, but the ones that won the theme competition that they had a while ago might be a good start. Those are Connections, Rin, and Red Train. There were others awareded various prizes too, here's the whole thing
Though I definitely agree some original ones would be nice, and I'll hold up my end of the bargain in regards to it. I just think it would be a good idea to have some WP theme ported, too.

Connections is definitely the new Kubrick. It's a great look and I'm seeing it everywhere. I'll take a look at porting a few over tonight, it'll give me a chance to put together a theme-conversion howto anyway.

Should be a pretty easy job. It's just the mark up really. I'll be happy to do some :)
edit Going to have a look at porting Connections right now. Not in the right mood for starting something from scratch at the moment. :)

hi @ all...
so, what to say? ehm... i'm here! what can i do? (in fact i hope som1else wants to port my theme, and i could just focus on making the stylesheet better ... styling currently unstyled things and such, getting deeper into the image replacement thing & adding this to sidebar-section-headlines a.s.o. to get it really dynamic...)
so hopefully som1 wants to help me out with the template-tag coding-side or get his hands on my theme and i'll provide you with latest (wp) files and stylesheets. would be nice...

something else i already offered is translating parts of the lp-documentation, where i'd like to know if there already is a specific plan on how to manage different languages in here... should i just add the german translation at the bottom? or have you considered using something like this:
http://www.freshlabs.de/journal/archive … bilingual/
or the polyglot plugin...? thx
you see it just needs a little activation-energy to get me into all this ;-) thx in advance erik

Very nice template, iRoybot!
Obviously we'd prefer if you converted it yourself (the designer always knows best, right?) because it will help you become familiar with LP and then you can give us feedback on how to make the template system even better. Ludo & I would be happy to help you along.
Translating the LP documentation would be great! :)
There is no specific plan as of yet, although I guess we could just set up parallel trees in the wiki, 1 per language? For now you can post the German translation at the bottom of the page.

For non-programmers like me, a nice theme can make you decide on a platform. So I think in terms of making LP popular, a good decision would be to port themes over to LP, choosing those that have already proven to be popular.
I'd like to recommend the Leaf skin for porting:
http://skins.nucleuscms.org/blog/21
It is probably easy to get the b2evolution version of the skin, since it's both WP and b2evo share a common root. You can download Leaf for b2evo here:
http://www.brotherson.com/downloads/details.php?file=5
Another nice looking skin IMHO is the Minima:
http://skins.nucleuscms.org/blog/22
Generally I find the Nucleus CMS has done good semi-original skin work, there are a few here that are good for porting:

The three column version of Kubrick for WordPress is also a sure bet for porting, since it's a useful twist on the hyperpopular Kubrick theme:

Thanks for the links, bolonki. I'm working on a theme site for LightPress and may port a few of these over. We're also looking for original designs too if anyone is interested in contributing.

I am a web designer specializing in WordPress designs. My Zen Minimalist was an honorable mention in the Alex King competition and I'd like to port it to LightPress, plus contribute a couple of new "LightPress only" designs. I'll post back here when I have something to show you.
This is all very intriguing!

Hey JoniMueller, your Zen Minimalist is very well regarded and beautiful; if you could port the theme and/or design some new ones for LP, it would be a terrific addition to this worthwhile project!
Very exciting, look forward to see them!

I just saw the superb porting of the Leaf skin to LightPress, and it looks like LP already has an extremely good set of themes, very well chosen! With quality themes like this, you don't need hundreds of skins... great job on the Leaf skin, Jerome!
