Mail deletion: what a pain!

Hello there,

one of the things which still prevent me from using Connector as my full time collaboration suite is that its performances are really poor... I wonder whether that's true for all users or is made somehow worse by network latency (I'm in Italy) or my computer setup (I'm on firefox v2.0.0.8 on XP).

Example: whenever I delete a message it takes Connector almost 7 seconds to complete the operation (after my confirmation). It "scales" linearly: 10 messages require 70 seconds (!!!) to be deleted during which firefox takes 100% CPU and displays at least a couple of messages claiming that the script isn't responding and could be stopped (the script goes on no matter what I instruct it to do).

Is there something weird with my hw/sw/net combination or are you experiencing the same?

Deleting message is extremely slow for me too. Moving messages is pretty speedy though.

looking at the code there's some improvements we could make. we've noted this + will look into improving it.

Thank you! I find it surprising though that people didn't mention it before... I wonder whether users are accessing it through IMAP more than Connector.

I don't delete very much email, and certainly not more than 2 or 3 at at time.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm almost exclusively an IMAP user. I also use the connector for file transfer and back up, but only through sftpDrive. I only log in to the connector these days to see if things have been fixed. At the moment, for my browser of choice (Opera), they're not.

Re: Mail deletion: what a pain!

I know that it sounds crazy, but I don't own a computer of my own. I have a work laptop that I'm not allowed to install software on, and a mobile device. I've completely moved into the Connector. My location determines what interface I use. The GUI while at work or in class, and IMAP (via mobile) while on the go, which is all the time these days. I'm happy with both.

I did notice a slow down in mail deletion through the Connector, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Like madams, I don't delete more than a few messages at a time. Mail doesn't pile up on me anymore since I've gone mobile. I administer my Inbox when I have a break in the action: waiting for haircut, in between classes, sitting in a cafe, whenever.

Re: Mail deletion: what a pain!

This problem is clearly still here. I am finding a lapse of 20 seconds and more to delete an email. Sometimes, it just ignores my request and I'll sit there for minutes without any response and I have to forcefully shut down the software. I recently switched from Textdrive email to Connector and I'm starting to regret it. I switched from Textdrive because TD gives you 16 connections per IP address and that is insufficient for our firm (five or more people online at a time). But better that than these impossibly slow responses.

Is there anything ya'll at Joyent can do to speed it up . . . or anything we can do here at home to address this?

Re: Mail deletion: what a pain!

I've noticed something interesting: deletion time seems to be strongly related to the size of the folder. Specifically, I had accumulated hundred of messages in my INBOX which I couldn't handle by Connector so I connected to it by an IMAP client (Pine) and cleaned them with it and all of a sudden deletion of new messages became very fast: a couple of seconds at most (I didn't count) to delete 10 messages.

Re: Mail deletion: what a pain!

I find that when deleting multiple emails it is so slow that it nearly always crashes Firefox.

Re: Mail deletion: what a pain!

How many messages do you have in your Inbox and Trash folders? As I said, after emptying both of them by IMAP performances started to be good (and I'm connecting from Italy, supposedly with a much higher latency compared to yours).
